Mahmoud Abdelfattah
Mahmoud Abdelfattah is a distinguished basketball coach whose career spans the NBA, G League, international leagues, and USA Basketball. A Chicago native and former All-American at Wilbur Wright College, he earned a full athletic scholarship to St. Cloud State University, completing his playing career in 2010.
Abdelfattah began coaching in 2011 at Perspectives Charter Schools in Chicago, where he quickly discovered a passion not just for the game, but for mentorship and community impact. That early experience fueled a lifelong commitment to developing young athletes and using basketball as a vehicle for growth, opportunity, and empowerment.
He joined the Rio Grande Valley Vipers—the NBA G League affiliate of the Houston Rockets—as an assistant coach in 2018, helping lead the team to a championship. He was promoted to head coach in 2019 and guided the team to another title in 2022, earning NBA G League Coach of the Year honors for a 24–10 season.
His success in the G League led to a role with the Houston Rockets during the 2022–23 NBA season, where he served as an assistant coach on the bench. This opportunity marked a significant career achievement, placing Mahmoud in the ranks of NBA coaching staff members, where he contributed his expertise to a high-level professional team.
In 2023, he expanded his global coaching footprint as head coach of the Sydney Kings in Australia's NBL for the 2023–24 season. In 2025, Mahmoud was selected to serve as a team scout and assistant coach for the USA Basketball Men’s AmeriCup Qualifying Team, marking his first official assignment with USA Basketball.
Throughout his career, Mahmoud has stayed committed to giving back, using basketball to empower young athletes and instill strong leadership values. With a deep belief in the transformative power of sports, he continues to inspire and mentor the next generation both on and off the court.
